"Three Rivers" Watershed Science Museum Workshop for 7th Graders

The Three Rivers residency program, led by Science Museum of Minnesota staff, will guide 7th grade students over three days (9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.) in answering two questions: What is a watershed? How does the use of surrounding land affect the health of a river? They will explore the important differences in water quality and land use of the Mississippi, St. Croix and Minnesota rivers with hands-on research with the same type of "live critters" that water quality scientists do!

Woody Guthrie's 100th -Anniversary Concert Celebration

Long time Minnesota folkies Pop Wagner and Charlie Maguire, and bluesman Tony Glover, come together in a rare collaboration to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie’s birth with a musical tribute to the songwriter. Guthrie's songs are a part of American folk music history and are celebrated by Maguire (guitar, vocals and harmonica), Wagner (guitar, fiddle, and vocals), and Glover (French harp and vocals). Consummate musicians who have performed nationally, at the Minnesota State Fair, and on Prairie Home Companion, the trio will bring to life Guthrie's music. The group prompted Minneapolis Star Tribune writer Jon Bream to write: "Unless Bob Dylan were to crash the party, you could not find a more apropos trio...to celebrate Woody Guthrie's birthday."

This is the story of a little girl who lives so intensely in her imagination that grown-ups around her view her as a troublemaker. Things come to a head when - in addition to all the exotic animals that Nalah has “placed” in the house – a pink tiger “follows” her home from the zoo and creates havoc. Nalah and the Pink Tiger Puppet Show

Nalah and the Pink Tiger is based on a picture book of the same title by artist, author and puppeteer, Anne Sawyer-Aitch. She drew inspiration for this story from her lively little niece. Things come to a head when - in addition to all the exotic animals that Nalah has “placed” in the house – a pink tiger “follows” her home from the zoo and creates havoc.

Simply Basket Weaving

Recycle, reuse, and learn a new skill. Local artist Amy P. will instruct participants on the art of simple basket weaving using newspaper. Amy has created baskets using a variety of materials. In this two-part workshop she will show you how to prepare your newspaper materials and teach you the weaving techniques to make a basket of your own. Each participant will need an awl or a long, skinny, flat-tipped screw driver, and a wire cutter (not the pliers kind). Limit 15. Ages 15 to Adult.
